Both of my kids enjoy arts & crafts, but my daughter really loves them. She’s constantly coloring, painting, cutting, taping, and/or gluing something, so for this craft I wanted to make an organizer that we could keep some of my daughter’s more frequently used craft supplies in.
I’m a big fan of quick and easy crafts for the kids; I also love anything that up-cycles, or reuses things we already have around the house. This craft is an easy way re-use tin cans, and it takes very little time to make. Win, win!
What You’ll Need:
- 4 tin cans
- Wooden oval or circle to use as the base
- Craft paper/Card Stock
- Paint
- Hot Glue
- 4 screws
Side Note: my daughter and I did this craft together, she’s six years old and too young to use a hot glue gun on her own.
We used four tin dog food cans for this project, but you could use vegetable or soup cans, whatever you have at home. Be sure to clean the cans thoroughly to get all the food out of them before using them for crafts. I just ran mine through the dishwasher.
We used a wooden oval that we already had at home as the base, but these are sold at Hobby Lobby or any craft store, so they’re easy to find. Be sure to do this step first so your paint can dry while you’re decorating the cans.
My daughter wanted to paint the base purple, but we didn’t have purple paint at home (and of course we didn’t realize this before we went to Hobby Lobby), so we had to mix our own.
Step 2: Cut craft paper/card stock to the same height as the cans and hot glue the paper to the tin cans. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of this step, but it was incredibly easy. I originally tried using the clear adhesive dots for this step, but it didn’t hold the glitter paper very well. Hot glue ended up working the best.
Step 3: Attach the decorated cans to the wooden base. To do this, I used short screws and a long screwdriver (to reach the bottom of the can). The screws go through the tin cans fairly easily, so there’s no need to pre-drill the holes, unless you just want to. Just be sure the screws are short enough that they won’t go through the bottom of the base.
Also, be sure that when you put the cans together on the base, that you put the seams of the craft paper on the inside of the cluster so that the seams are all facing each other.
I almost forgot, as you can see in the picture above, we also added glitter to the base because… well… my daughter loves glitter, and we always seem to have extra lying around.
Once this is all assembled, the only thing left to do is fill the new container with your craft supplies and enjoy.
See? Simple and fast.
Overall, I think the organizer turned out really well. (Even though we glued the mermaid scales on upside down.) My daughter loves it, and she’s ready to make more.
I hope you enjoy making this incredibly easy organizer!
Happy Crafting!!
